Traditional and historic buildings bring their own challenges but, with a sensitive approach and careful regard for scale and proportion, contemporary design can enhance the character of a traditional building. Our projects include alterations to many traditional properties - typical Hebridean houses and former schools (see Baleshare Old School, below) as well as distinctive, locally significant Listed properties (see Taigh Chearsabhagh and Lee View, below). With the experience we have in this field, comes a detailed practical knowledge of traditional forms of construction and an understanding of the architectural opportunities and challenges which these properties present.
Where a property is Listed, there are more stringent consent requirements - Listed Building Consent must be sought in addition to the normal Planning approval. Listing can bring with it certain requirements and restrictions in the scope of work which can be undertaken, which vary according to the specific reason for the Listing and its classification. Having successfully obtained Listed Building Consent for several buildings of local prominence, we have the knowledge to guide clients through the process.

restoration masonry skills and expertise
Architect and Partner, Robert Fraser has completed an SVQ in Restoration Masonry. Run by the Scottish Lime Centre, the course combined theory and practical construction over a number of traditional masonry restoration techniques. Although Robert already has experience of projects using traditional masonry restoration, this was a fantastic opportunity to develop his expertise.
